Dear S&D Ambassador Community,
We love you for being a part of our community and our mission. In a time where the world needs a lot more love, we wanted to send ours your way.
Since the day this dream started in my living room, we were born to be a purpose-driven company devoted to creating a better way for modern women to earn money on their own schedule. We were tired of business being only about financial gain and not enough about doing good in the world. It is that same want that emboldens me to speak out about racial inequality now, even though I don’t have all the answers and am afraid I will not find the right words to say. My want is greater than my fear.
As a company, we stand in unity with the Black Community. We love you. We hear you. We see the grave injustices rooted in systemic racism and know that silence and inaction is not an option. Black Lives Matter. To us, this statement is not in opposition to all lives matter or blue lives matter, it is the acknowledgment that Black lives are in danger and we must do more to drive racial equality in our world.
Last week, S&D brands donated $10,000 to The NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, an organization dedicated to racial justice. There is much more we need to do. This last week, I connected and reflected to help inform our actions. I sought external help to broaden our perspectives and support our actions. We will continue to look for ways to make an impact on social equality aligned with our core mission, the economic empowerment of all women. We will start by focusing on the following areas and specific actions:
Field Diversity & Inclusion:
We are committed to increasing the number of women of color in our Ambassador community and nurturing an inclusive culture.
Diversity in Company Leadership and Fostering an Inclusive Environment
We recognize the need for more diversity within our Home Office leadership roles. While our Ohio team has amazing Black leaders, this is not true in all functions. We will take the following actions to find and attract candidates of color at all levels at our Home Office. As we open new roles:
We will proactively ask our employees where we have blind spots so we can listen, learn and get better. Additionally, we believe every voice matters and we will be offering paid time off for all employees to vote in the upcoming election.
Social Impact that Fights Systemic Racism Aligned with our Core Mission
We are exploring new partnerships that help level the playing field for Black girls and women. We will build on the good work we have done with organizations like Girls Inc., Build On, and Dress for Success to make an impact on women and children of color. We will be sharing more details in the coming weeks.
This is just to start off an ongoing conversation, and ongoing action. Thank you for your listening with open minds, for sharing with open hearts, and for partnering with us as we advocate for equality while continuing to keep our mission at the center of all that we do.
I know many of you are thinking, how do I advance our core mission of the economic empowerment of women, while not being insensitive? Is it ok to share products and our opportunity? After the difficulties of COVID-19, we are building momentum and I need to pay my bills- now.
At this time, we are sharing this with our Ambassadors: you can feel free to share with customers. When we have more specific information on the social cause we are supporting, we will email customers. Our goal is to do that in the next 30 days.
I will give the advice our advisor shared with me. You need to be strong as a business to help anyone at all. People have to pay their bills. There is no shame in that. Go back to business, but not just business as usual. Share with awareness. If you feel uncomfortable, that is ok. Voice it. Start out by acknowledging the pain at hand, that you feel uncomfortable but are continuing with your work for your family, your team and your mission. No one wants the economy to suffer more. Respect the responses of those you connect with, and listen to all with empathy and love.
